What to Do With a Loved One's Belongings After They Die

Every house tells the story of the person who lived there. After they die, someone has to decide what happens to it all: the clothes, the books, the furniture, the boxes in the loft. For families in Market Drayton, Whitchurch and across north Shropshire, it is often the job that feels hardest to start, and the one with the least guidance on how to do it.
Is there a time limit for clearing belongings?
Usually there is no fixed legal deadline, but there can be practical ones. A rented or council home may need to be handed back by a certain date. An empty house may have insurance conditions. An executor may need to sell the property. It is worth finding out which of these apply before you plan anything, and not letting anyone rush you into decisions you cannot undo.
What should you look for first?
Before anything leaves the house, look for the things that cannot be replaced, and the things the executor needs:
the will, and any letters from a solicitor;
bank, pension and insurance paperwork;
medical documents and appointment letters;
the person's phone, which often holds contacts the family need;
photo albums, letters and keepsakes;
medals, jewellery and anything of family value.
When Shropshire Expert Cleaners LTD clears a home, we can add an extra day just to search for these. It can save families three to four weeks waiting for replacement documents, and it means treasured things are not lost by accident.
How do you decide what to keep?
There is no right answer, but a few ideas help. Start with one room, not the whole house. Keep a small box for each family member. Take photographs of larger items you cannot keep but want to remember. And if you are unsure, put it aside rather than throwing it away.
Some families want to be there for every decision. Others ask us to set aside anything personal and let them go through it later, somewhere calmer. Both are completely fine.
What can be donated or reused?
A lot of what is in a home can help someone else. In our clearances, items that can be reused go to charities and second-hand traders. Since 2022 Shropshire Expert Cleaners LTD has given just over £30,000 of donations in items and services, much of it from homes where families asked for things to be passed on. You can read more about our charitable donations.
What cannot just go in a skip?
Some items have their own rules. Upholstered furniture can contain persistent chemicals and has to be disposed of in a particular way. Carpets and mattresses have their own routes. Sharps, such as needles, go in proper yellow or purple bins. And if a death was not found straight away, contaminated items must be treated as hazardous waste, with a duty of care record for every load. As a biohazard and forensic disinfection team, we handle all of this correctly.
Finding help, and finding the order
There is so much to do after a death that belongings often come last, but they weigh heavily. Our free After They Die guide has a whole phase for the property, so you can see where clearing belongings fits alongside probate, utilities and insurance. It was developed in the UK by Shropshire Expert Cleaners LTD, for England and Wales, and it is free with no account.

Frequently asked questions
Should we wait for probate before clearing belongings? Often it is wise to record and value contents first. Our post on clearing a house before probate explains this in more detail.
Can we keep sentimental items? Families usually can, but if items are valuable the executor should record them first, so the estate is fair to everyone.
What happens to clothes? Good clothing can go to charity shops. Anything contaminated after an unattended death must be treated as hazardous waste instead.
Can you clear the house while we are not there? Yes. Many families prefer that. We agree what to keep in advance and set aside anything personal.
What about the person's phone? Keep it safe. It often holds contacts and accounts that make the rest of the job easier.
