Who to Notify When Someone Dies in the UK: The List Nobody Gives You

One of the most tiring parts of a bereavement is telling people. Not just family and friends, but banks, councils, energy companies, insurers and more. Each call means explaining again. Each one asks for a reference number you may not have. For families in Wem, Whitchurch and across Shropshire, here is a practical list of who to notify when someone dies, and in roughly what order.
Who should you tell first?
The first people to tell are the ones who need to act straight away:
close family and friends;
the person's GP, if they were not already involved;
the employer, if the person was working;
a landlord or housing provider, if the home was rented;
anyone who cares for pets or has a key to the house.
It is fine to ask a friend or relative to share some of these calls. You do not have to make every one yourself.
What does Tell Us Once cover?
Tell Us Once is a free government service that reports a death to several public bodies at once. GOV.UK says the registrar will either complete it with you or give you a reference number to use within 28 days. It can notify organisations such as:
HMRC, for tax;
the Department for Work and Pensions, for benefits and state pension;
the Passport Office;
the DVLA;
the local council, for council tax, housing benefit and services.
It saves a lot of repeated calls, but it is not the whole list.
Who do you need to notify yourself?
GOV.UK is clear that Tell Us Once does not notify everyone. You will usually need to contact these yourself:
banks and building societies;
private and workplace pension providers;
insurers, including home, car and life insurance;
energy, water, phone and broadband suppliers;
mortgage lenders and credit card companies;
TV licensing, subscriptions and memberships.
Many banks and utilities will ask for a copy of the death certificate. That is why it often helps to buy several copies when you register the death. Our post on how to register a death and use Tell Us Once explains that step in more detail.
Do not forget the house
If the person lived alone, their home is now empty. You may need to tell the home insurer, keep the heating on low in winter, and redirect post. If the death happened at home and was not found straight away, the house may also need specialist help before anyone can safely go back in.
That is where our biohazard and forensic disinfection team comes in. Shropshire Expert Cleaners LTD has worked in homes after a death for 17 years, as contractors to councils and the NHS, and our staff are DBS-checked and fully insured. Read about who to call for after-death cleaning and our death clearance and cleaning service.
Keeping track of every call
After a few days, it is easy to forget who you have rung and what they said. The free After They Die guide was developed in the UK, for England and Wales, to help with exactly this. It sets out who to tell in a sensible order, and keeps your notes and reference numbers on your own device.
Frequently asked questions
How many death certificates should I get? There is no fixed number. Many families buy several, because some organisations ask to see a certificate rather than a photocopy.
Do I need to tell the DVLA myself? If you use Tell Us Once, the DVLA can be told for you. Check what the registrar confirms.
Should I close social media accounts? You can. Many platforms let family close or memorialise an account. Decide together what feels right.
What if I do not know which banks they used? Look through post, statements and the person's phone. Searching the home carefully, before any clearance, is often the quickest way to find out.
Do I have to tell everyone straight away? No. Start with the people who need to act now and work through the rest at a pace that feels manageable.
